First Glimpse: Comparing the New Sony PlayStation 5 with the Original – Internet Activation Required

With just a few weeks left until the release of the updated and more compact Sony PlayStation 5, an enterprising user known as “phantompainss” on the social media platform X managed to get their hands on the console. They even conducted a brief photoshoot alongside the original version of the gaming console, though for some reason, the images were later removed. Fortunately, the internet remembers everything.

It appears that the new PS5 will indeed take up less space compared to the original version. It’s not only thinner but also a few centimeters shorter. Despite the more compact design, it retains all the interface options found in its predecessor, including an HDMI port, a couple of USB ports, a power port, and an Ethernet port.

The photos also confirm that the removable disc drive for the PS5 will require an internet connection for activation. One of the images displayed a message: “Cannot use the disc drive. You need to connect the PS5 to the network to register the disc drive for the PS5.” While unverified reports suggest that this procedure may be a one-time requirement, concerns remain about whether gamers will be able to use discs if Sony ever shuts down the authentication servers for the PS5 and the disc drive.

The updated console is set to hit the market in November, although the manufacturer has yet to disclose an exact release date. The new Sony PlayStation 5 will be available at the familiar price of $499.99 for the version with a disc drive and $449.99 for the digital-only edition. This move reaffirms Sony’s commitment to providing quality gaming experiences with the latest hardware and technology.
