Wabtec has unveiled the world’s first heavy-haul locomotive powered by electric power.

The locomotive was named FLXdrive, and it will work in Australia, transporting iron ore. Australian ore trains are enormous in length, exceeding 2 km. FLXdrive will not be the only locomotive that will propel such a train. Instead, it will be paired with a conventional diesel locomotive, making the overall setup a hybrid one.  

FLXdrive boasts a battery capacity of 7 MWh and a traction power of 3.2 MW. Interestingly, the locomotive will not be charged at any station: the creators promise that the energy obtained from recovery will be sufficient.  

So far, apparently, we are talking about only one copy, which will be used by Roy Hill in Western Australia. By the way, the locomotive is painted pink because the company supports breast cancer research.
