Stargate, a half-trillion-dollar grandiose project initiated by tech giants OpenAI, Oracle and SoftBank, aimed at creating advanced data centers and the necessary infrastructure for the development of artificial intelligence in the US, is considering expanding its activities outside the country, including investments in the UK and other foreign countries.
Although Stargate was initially positioned as an initiative designed to strengthen the US position in artificial intelligence, the project is now exploring options for international expansion, according to the Financial Times. In addition to the UK, Germany and France have come under Stargate’s radar as potential sites for new facilities. These countries are seen as strategically important regions with developed technological infrastructure and qualified personnel, making them attractive for large-scale investment in the artificial intelligence sector.

The project is currently actively raising $100 billion in initial funding. SoftBank, one of the key members of the consortium, is expected to commit tens of billions of dollars in a combination of debt and equity. These funds will form the basis for the deployment of the first phase of Stargate’s infrastructure in the United States.
The announcement of the Stargate project in January of this year caused a wide resonance and received high praise from the political leadership. Donald Trump, commenting on the launch of the initiative, emphasized its importance as a “declaration of confidence in America” and its leadership role in technological advancement.
Considering international expansion so early in the project’s development may be indicative of several factors. First, it may be due to the growing global demand for computing power to train and maintain artificial intelligence models that is beyond the capacity of a single country. Second, international diversification can reduce the risks associated with concentrating all resources in one region and ensure a more flexible and sustainable development of the project in the long term.
The decision to expand internationally, if finalized, could significantly impact the global landscape of artificial intelligence development by increasing competition and driving innovation in this technology area.
