First graphics cards were sold out by miners, now – by AI-developers. Chinese AI-companies are selling off RTX 4090D due to the overabundance of computational resources

According to DigiTimes, Chinese AI development companies have started selling off Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090D gas pedals due to falling demand for computing power. Previously, firms had been buying up consumer GPUs, including the GeForce RTX 4090D, to develop AI technologies, but now server utilization has dropped to 20%. To remain profitable, firms are selling off idle GPUs. And all this is happening against a backdrop of uncertainty about the supply of new graphics cards due to another tightening of US sanctions.

In China, the GeForce RTX 4090D are now selling for up to $6,000, but a mass sale of gas pedals can reduce the cost, which is only to the benefit of enthusiasts and gamers. However, getting prices back to pre-AI era levels will take time.

It was recently reported that 80% of computing resources for AI tasks in China are idle. This indicates a reassessment of computing power needs. The situation with GPU availability in China is not stable either: recently GeForce RTX 4090D was difficult to buy. It is not clear how the market will develop further. Probably, everything will depend on the ability of China and the US to come to an agreement.
