Today marks exactly 40 years since the launch of the iconic Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), also known as the Famicom.
In Japan, the console was launched on July 15, 1983, although it was released much later in other markets. The console had a very strong impact on the market, it was even called the greatest console of all time (IGN in 2011), and finally sales stopped only in 2003, that is, 20 years after the start! Moreover, in 2016, Nintendo itself released the NES Classic Edition, which emulates the games of the original NES.
For all the time of sales, almost 62 million consoles were officially sold, which allows the NES to now occupy 13th place in the list of the best-selling consoles of all time. However, the world also sold a huge number of NES clones under a variety of names. In the CIS countries, for example, Dendy and Subor prefixes were popular. The first, according to various estimates, was sold for all time in the amount of 1.5-6 million units, and this is only one model.
The NES is also known for being the one that gave life to the games that would eventually become iconic franchises that still thrive to this day.
